We have launched recruitment for Dr. Leijser’s substudy, The Role of Inflammation in Brain Injury and Development of Preterm Infants (P3 Brain Health Study).
Premature or preterm birth (before 37 weeks of pregnancy) impacts approximately 8% of births in Canada annually and we don’t know why it happens. A child born preterm is at a greater risk of developmental problems later in life than a child born full-term (or close to the anticipated due date).
The purpose of this research study is to be able:
- compare the brain of preterm infants with term infants;
- compare developmental outcomes at one year in preterm infants with term infants; and
- improve health outcomes for infants.
Infants are eligible for this substudy if their mom is participating in the P3 Cohort and/or High Risk Cohort studies and the infant is either born preterm (born at less than 37 weeks into the pregnancy) or at term (39 to 41 weeks).
This study consists of:
- MRI around term corrected age (the anticipated due date) of the infant;
- Video recordings of the infant’s movements around term corrected age and 3 months corrected age that will be recorded by the parents; and
- Follow-up assessment of the baby at 12 months corrected age.
The Principal Investigator for this study is Dr. Lara Leijser, MD, PhD, MSc, Department of Pediatrics at the University of Calgary. This substudy has been approved by the University of Calgary’s Conjoint Health Research Ethics Board (REB21-1446)
